I had a bass guitar once. I sold it many years ago, as I hadn’t played it for a while.

I wish I’d thought “I haven’t played that for a while, I think I’ll play it” instead of “I haven’t played that for a while, I think I’ll sell it.”.

But you live and learn I suppose.

I sometimes sit down at a keyboard and make some pleasant sounds with it. I sometimes kid myself that I can play the piano.

But really, I can’t. I have plenty of friends that can demonstrate this fact by being actual musicians.

Those friends, however, will feel like they too should just give up and go home when they see my old friend Adam play. It’s quite something, and not a little frightening.

There was one moment during his performance that I actually thought he was having some kind of fit. But no, that was just jazz, man. Just jazz.

I’ve always been drawn to talented people, particularly musicians. Apart from their inherent entertainment value, I’m sure they live out my long-since abandoned dream of being a muso.

They can be intimidating though. I went to see my friend Adam at a recording of his Jazz recital and the trio of musicians playing were all intergalactically good. They were, to use a much-overused word correctly, awesome.

Gaz was the drummer and honestly, there wasn’t any part of the kit he didn’t use to make some sort of noise. Legs, screws, stands, everything. Pretty impressive, really.

I used to say that when I grew up I wanted a house with three key things: A darkroom, a grand piano and a fireman’s pole.

I think I’d be happy to swap the darkroom for a photographic studio, and I’d like many more instruments than just the piano, but the fireman’s pole is non-negotiable.

Steve is the drummer with the band Sodared. I’d want a drum kit eventually, but a grand piano, cello, trombone and an acoustic bass come first.
